EXPEDITION - An integrated approach to expose expedition information and research results

The portal EXPEDITION offers an integrative “one-stop-shop” framework for discovery and re-use of scientific content originating from research platforms operated by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). This information sharing framework is designed for interoperability and can be extended to various information systems worldwide. The framework is based on open technologies and access is freely available for scientists, funding agencies and the public. Because AWI’s research is known to be focused on both Polar Regions, access to various ready-to-use data products from the Arctic Ocean, the Southern Ocean and Antarctic as well as AWI-operated observing networks will be offered

[Session abstract] The panel will discuss the character of scientific discourse in the digital era by considering these questions. • How has the character of scientific discourse developed in the digital era? o In what ways have digital technologies influenced traditional scientific discourse? o How will this influence evolve in the 21st century in basic and applied research? • What is the reality of, and potential for, inter-, cross- and trans-disciplinary discourse in the sciences in the digital era? • Define the issues and potential resolutions in the relationship between scientific discourse and policy, governance, management, adaptation, and mitigation regimes? • In what manner is scientific discourse socially constructed? • How should research data, on which scientific analyses are based, be reviewed, valued, and shared

A Concept for Attribute-Based Authorization on D-Grid Resources

In Germany's D-Grid project numerous Grid communities are working together to provide a common overarching Grid infrastructure. The major aims of D-Grid are the integration of existing Grid deployments and their interoperability. The challenge lies in the heterogeneity of the current implementations: three Grid middleware stacks and different Virtual Organization management approaches have to be embraced to achieve the intended goals. Towards a Holistic Approach to Policy Interoperabilityin Digital Libraries and Digital Repositories

Underpinning every digital library and digital repository there is a policy framework, which makes the digital library viable - without a policy framework a digital library is little more than a container for content. Policy governs how a digital library is instantiated and run. It is therefore a meta-domain which is situated both outside the digital library and any technologies used to deliver it, and within the digital library itself. Policy is also a key aspect of digital library and digital repository interoperability in a common and integrated information space. Policy interoperability - that is the exchange and reuse of policies - is a step beyond policy standardisation. Furthermore, effective and efficient policy frameworks are also one of the Digital Curation Center (DCC), DigitalPreservationEurope (DPE), nestor and Center for Research Libraries (CRL) core criteria for digital repositories. In this article, we share our research on policy interoperability levels and the experimental survey on policy interoperability conducted with real-life digital libraries, as a contribution towards the definition of a Policy Interoperability Framework
